2009 Fall Open House
This year's Fall Open House event was held on Saturday, November 7, 2009. Students and their families were invited to visit the UW campus to participate in information sessions, guided campus tours, and speak with current students and faculty about admission and programs offered at Waterloo.
This was a great opportunity for students and parents to learn more about AFM and hear current AFM students speak about their student life and co-op experiences. Click here to learn more about this year's event and for anyone who happened to miss the Fall Open House event this year, feel free to download the AFM Presentation and Handout.

SAF Attends Canadian Club Luncheon
A select group of SAF students attended the Canadian Club luncheon on November 9, 2009 as part of one of the many PFC prizes from the conference held in September. The keynote speaker, Ian Russell, President and CEO of the Investment Industry Association of Canada presented "Smart Reforms Ensuring Competitive and Sound Markets."

Front: Ian Russell, John Capobianco, Chris May, and Patty Mah
The 11 students and four faculty and staff members were seated at two tables sponsored by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario. The students, eight of whom were PFC prize winners, and the other three finance interested students, were joined by Deb Kraft, Director of the MTAX program, Denise Bacon, CECS Field Coordinator, Patty Mah, Recruiting and Marketing manager, and Lynn Graham, Student Relations Coordinator. ICAO's Director of Government Affairs, Christopher May, was seated at the head table. As the only students in attendance, the SAF students were invited to stand for applause. The other attendees spoke highly of extending the opportunity of hearing the speakers to students.
Ian Russell spoke of ideas related to Canadian Securities Reform, competitive Capital Gains taxes, and market entry barriers. He stressed the need for a single regulator within the Securities Market to provide increased efficiency and consistency. After the talk, the floor was opened for questions and Howard Leung drew the speaker's attention to suggesting ideas of how the market could be encouraged to invest in young entrepreneurs. The question was well received.

You@Waterloo Day
This year’s You@Waterloo Day event was held on Saturday, May 23rd, where we had over 4000 registered visitors and about 320 specifically for AFM! The day was a great success as students from all around, joined UW faculty, staff and current students in asking all kinds of questions about their first year experience, as well as participating in residence, campus and university college tours. The day was completely overtaken by excitement and enthusiasm as incoming students had a chance to interact one-on-one with some of the people that are actively involved in the AFM program. It was an absolute joy getting to know the different admitted students and learning about their views and concerns on beginning a new leg of their lives in university. Thank you to all those students and parents that came out to the event and a special thanks to all the volunteers that made the day possible. We look forward to September and are thrilled to meet all of the new first year AFM students in our new School of Accounting and Finance building!

Accountants Give Back
Once again, the Accounting
Students Association (ASA)
held an 'Accountants Give
Back' day, volunteering
their time at four local
charities: The Hopespring
Cancer Support Centre,
the Kitchener-Waterloo
Humane Society, the
Independent Living Centre of Waterloo Region, and the Waterloo Public Library. Each group did a variety of tasks, ranging from raking leaves; building fences; spring cleaning; and interacting with children at the library. Overall, the day was a success, and all who were involved had an enjoyable experience. The initiative, now in its second straight term, provides a way for SAF students to give contribute to the KW community. The ASA hopes to continue volunteering in the future, and perhaps make 'Accountants Give Back' an annual tradition.
